Sharing Information and Being a Resource

Picture of a para wokring with students and being a resource. In Core Competency Area 5: Supporting the Teaching and Learning Environment, you learned that the paraprofessional plays an important role in supporting greater involvement of students with disabilities in educational and community settings. You may be expected to teach the social and daily-living skills that will lead to more successful integration into the community. You may be involved in providing transportation for individuals with disabilities to and from various community settings. These services are beneficial to the student with a disability, as well as to the community. There are many agencies, organizations, and services that play a vital role in supporting students with disabilities in school and vocational or residential settings.

As a paraprofessional supporting students with OHD, you may be expected to locate resources in the community via the Internet or library searches. You might also be expected to know how to access information or materials from hospitals or rehabilitation, physical, occupational, and speech therapy professionals in seeking resources. Once you’ve located these resources, you may be expected to share the information with other members of the educational team who also are working to support the student with OHD and his/her family.
